#pypa logs for Thursday the 31st of May, 2018

(Back to #pypa overview) (Back to channel listing) (Animate logs)
[18:33:48] <sumanah> I need to step away but will look at logs later
[18:34:13] <sumanah> mikegold10: maybe if you want to ask this further you could try posting on the pypa-dev and distutils-sig mailing lists,
[18:34:13] <sumanah> * https://mail.python.org/mm3/mailman3/lists/distutils-sig.python.org/
[18:34:13] <sumanah> * https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pypa-dev
[18:34:25] <sumanah> or posting to https://github.com/pypa/packaging-problems/issues/
[18:34:34] <sumanah> on the question: "add Warehouse as a channel to Conda?"
[18:34:59] <sumanah> best wishes and thanks for bringing it up
[18:44:06] <ngoldbaum> mikegold10: in the long term conda is going to add the capability to install packages from pypi as a first class feature of conda
[18:44:21] <ngoldbaum> mikegold10: my understanding is that this is difficult and isn't something that will ship soon, but it is on their roadmap
[18:47:44] <ronny> the implementation details for doing the in disk stuff should be a lot more simple thanks to binary wheels, and other fun, i beleive the main hardship is in the multi-format stuff (but im not versed in conda code)
[18:48:24] <ngoldbaum> there's an issue tracking this but i can't seem to find it
[18:49:18] <ngoldbaum> https://github.com/conda/conda/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3Atag-pip_interop
[18:49:45] <mikegold10> I'll look into it, thanks
[18:50:17] <ngoldbaum> ronny: unfortunately not every package has binary wheels :/
[20:03:31] <ronny> ngoldbaum: source only wheels also work for a wide range
[20:04:01] <ronny> ngoldbaum: at least for the loads im familiar with the c stuff is pretty much contained in a set of core packages and all the other things are more fun
[20:33:59] <ngoldbaum> sure, and for most of the popular packages there are wheels
[20:34:12] <ngoldbaum> but there's also lots of packages that are just wrappers around a C API
[20:34:17] <ngoldbaum> and they just ship the sdist to pypi
[20:34:47] <ngoldbaum> while in principle they could ship a wheel, that's a big ask for someone to set up for a repo with zero familiarity with wheels
[20:35:07] <ngoldbaum> matthew brett's multibuild helps a lot, but even then it took me a day to set up the last time i tried for a project
